Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a natural and powerful derivative of an individual’s own blood. It is the portion of the blood where all of the healing and rejuvenation power is found. Platelet Rich Plasma can be injected into numerous areas of the body to heal, revive and enhance.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy as a treatment is not new to medicine. It has been used for decades in dentistry and orthopedic medicine and for general wound healing with much success. More recently, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used with promising results for facial aesthetic purposes (Vampire Facial, Vampire Face Lift), male and female sexual enhancement, scar therapy and hair regrowth.
At KB Holistic, we are offering Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections for Erectile Dysfunction in men, Peyronie’s Disease, sexual enhancement, urinary incontinence in women, Vampire Breast Lift, facial rejuvenation, scar correction and hair regrowth. As a note, PD is also referred to as Peyronie Disease, Peyronie’s Disease, and our spanish speaking friends might call it La Peyronie, or Enfermedad Peyronie.
Blood is mainly composed of RBC (red blood cells), WBC (white blood cells), plasma (proteins) and platelets. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has healing and growth factors that initiate and aid in the healing process. Platelets and their numerous growth factors are what is deposited into tissues upon injury so the effected area begins to heal. Have you ever gotten a scrape or cut that turned into a scab and some yellow liquid leaked from the edge? That is where the platelets and plasma are that are working under the scab to repair the tissues!
The Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is separated from other elements of the blood with the use of a machine called a centrifuge. By spinning the blood the major blood elements separate into a predictable layers. The portion with platelets can also be concentrated. Once harvested and activated (meaning, they react as if there is an injury), they release chemical messages into the tissues where injected initiating a cascade of reactions that stimulate among other things stem cells and formation of tiny capillaries which cause the healing to begin. With the help of the centrifuge, the normal amount of platelets ( typical baseline blood platelet count is approximately 200,000 per µL) is concentrated (up to 1,600,000 per µL) which is believed to intensify their healing potential.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Procedure
The first step in the process is to draw 30 to 60 ml of blood from a large vein in the arm. The second step is to spin the blood in the centrifuge to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood. The part of the body to be treated is anesthesized and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is injected. The entire process will take about 30 to 45 minutes. Before and After the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) procedureaspirin and any non-steroidal anti inflammatory medications should be avoided 7 days before and 14 days after the injection. These medications cause platelets to not react positively to the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. For the same reasons, alcohol and tobacco is also to be discouraged. You can resume normal activity but you should avoid strenuous activities. Some pain and sometimes bruising in the area of injection is normal and should go away within 24 to 48 hours.
